I dial up my patches using headphones - it keeps peace with the wife and kids

. I use an old pair of AKG K141s, and then check what I've done against a pair of Bose QC15s and a cheap pair of Sonys (MDR-CD170). For my own live monitoring, I use Sennheiser in-ears with Shure E-5 buds. Strangely though, the other guys in the band want to hear me too :), so I went looking for an FRFR to use as a "courtesy" monitor, and for use as my onstage "amp" for small gigs.
Before the 11R, I could get whatever sound I needed from my Mesa Mk V, 2x12, and pedalboard, but for me, the whole point of going to the 11R in the first place was to have a good-sounding plug-and-play direct-to-FOH solution and to downsize physically - I saw no point in bringing the amp as well as the 11R.
After trying a few FRFRs, out of the ones I tried, I preferred the sound of the EV ELX-115P - it sounded more like the "amp in the room" - but I couldn't swing a good enough deal with the EV dealer. I ended up with a QSC K12. They are VERY balanced and precise, but maybe a bit too "hi-fi". Takes some tinkering with the LF and HF EQ switches, and some getting used to, but ultimately, the K-12 sounds fine.
